Hi, I’m Takumi a spirits lover & designer from Japan,
working for alcohol industry i.g.) distillery and bars.

Say hi via @takumiisobe_

In my capacity as a designer, I have provided visual support to brands within Japan’s alcohol industry. To promote the industry proactively, I have established two brands centred around Japanese koji spirits, specifically shochu, in collaboration with a venerable distillery. This sets me apart from the conventional approaches taken by traditional brands.

By redefining not only the visual approaches but also the essence of alcohol and its potential for enjoyment, drawing inspiration from global alcoholic beverages, my objective is to invigorate the industry, elevate its prominence, and enhance overall appreciation.

While shochu is a unique and alluring product, the industry faces challenges with declining consumption, leading to the closure of numerous distilleries. In 2022, sales for the top 50 companies hit a historic low, comparable to figures from 2005.

*Shochu, a Japanese traditional distilled alcohol, is crafted from diverse ingredients like sweet potatoes, barley, and rice. What sets shochu apart is its single distillation process, whereas spirits like vodka, gin, and whiskey are typically distilled multiple times.

As a designer, I breathe life into Japanese Dark Spirts collection. I harmonise tradition with innovation, weaving the rich western history of distillation and Eastern koji fermentation into captivating visuals. My mission: celebrate its roots and propel it into the future.

As a co-founder, I led the planning, management, and brand design, specialising in graphic design. Studio Shochu’s guerrilla-style events are a testament to our unique shochu themes. We curate sake breweries, deliver presentations, and craft visual identities that capture each theme.

As a co-founder and visual director, I collaborate with a venerable distillery to refine our brand concept. Together, we embrace once-perceived negatives in terms of fermentaion and distillation, shaping them into strengths. Our shared vision: create a world-class koji spirits laboratory.

Aspiration

I aspire to craft an enriching, pleasurable ambience that alcohol evoke—be it through visual, craftmanship, or presentation realms. My aim is for spirits to garner rightful recognition, enhancing the moments of many.

Amidst the culinary renaissance, I underscore the essence of spirits crafting in tandem with tradition. I strongly believe that shochu, distilled uniquely with koji in Japan, possesses this latent potential. In this industry, I channel my efforts into elevating shochu’s allure. Yet, embracing global currents is crucial; I’ve been embracing innovative liaisons.
